College was a dream after four long, difficult years at my big local high school. I was finally in a place that accepted and supported my disabilities rather than beat me down for them.

Only having just learned a year before that I had a severe math learning disability and working memory deficits, I was still getting used to the idea that being “bad” at math was not just a result of “laziness” or “stupidity.” But, my college offered an environment where I could leave my frustrating days in a math class behind.

Between my newly discovered learning disabilities and long-standing fights with mental illness, I was unsure of my abilities the first time I stepped onto the inspiring Mills College campus in Oakland, California.

What It's Like Being Young With Crohn's Disease
About a year ago, I was coming out of surgery for my Crohn’s disease. At 21, I had made the difficult but necessary decision to remove my entire colon and live with a permanent ostomy. I was hopeful, prepared for battle and so well-supported. Truly, I handled that surgery about as well as possible. I don’t think I cried more than once. My main role, in fact, felt like making sure everyone around me was comfortable with the idea of this surgery. Even as a young kid, I was always complimented on “how well you handle your illness!” and “ You seem so on top of things!” After all, I am a senior college student with 323,987 things to do, a color-coded planner, huge dreams, and a go-getter attitude to take on the world. Most would think I do indeed have my life together. Well, guess what? Sometimes having it all together is overrated. Sometimes neglecting your emotions for the comfort of others isn’t the right thing to do. Sometimes you need to feel without apology.

It's Time to End 'Fake Claim' Harassment of Disabled People
Fake claiming is the act of harassing a disabled person by claiming they are faking their disability. This abuse is commonly directed towards people with invisible disabilities, those who do not use visible mobility aids (or use them part-time) and people who don’t meet the narrow stereotype of what disability looks like (e.g. younger people). Fake claiming can happen anywhere at any time but commonly occurs when disabled people access facilities such as accessible parking spaces, toilets or public transport seats. Almost every person with an invisible condition will have been subjected to fake claiming at some point. This needs to end.
