The makers of popular anti-baldness drug Propecia knew about a risk of suicide for people taking the medication, but decided not to warn the public, according to newly unsealed court documents.
The papers show that Merck & Co. opted not to include a warning about suicide risk when it updated the drug’s label in 2011.
More than 2.4 million people were prescribed Propecia in 2020, according to Reuters. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received 700 reports of suicidal thoughts and behavior from people taking it during the period 2011-2020.
