Chris was surfing at Ocean Beach, San Francisco, as he did each weekend for the past ten years. Except this time, he took a spill head-first and broke his neck in eight places.

When his family came to see him, he asked them to switch off the ventilator keeping him alive. Dr. Mohamad Bydon, a neurosurgeon at Mayo Clinic made contact with the Barr family and Chris agreed to be the first patient for a stem cell transplant trial.
