I am like no other student. My mild cerebral palsy and the types of classes I’m enrolled in aren’t commonly seen together. My teachers, of course, are aware that I have cerebral palsy, but most of the students are not. I don’t make an effort to hide my CP — I walk the way I walk, naturally, and that’s that — but I don’t appear the way that society views a person who has a disability. Now that I’m much older and more mature, my friends know that I have CP and that I may need help sometimes — like a hand going down the stairs or stepping off of a curb, for instance — but it’s not a big deal to them, and I appreciate that. Yes, cerebral palsy is undeniably a part of me, but it is far from what defines me.

Usually, people go through five specific stages in their emotional recovery: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance.Of course, it isn’t a linear process – you may skip one phase or oscillate between them depending on the day.

I know all patients with chronic illnesses are unique and have their own individual struggles. But I think the one thing we all have in common is the sheer unpredictability of living with a chronic illness. Most of us have good and bad days, or at least bad days and not as bad days. I actually compare it to a gambling addiction. One of the worst things for someone with a gambling addiction is to actually win. When that happens, the mind can convince itself that it will happen again and again, if not every single time.

For those of us with packed calendars who also want to be our healthiest, it’s much more realistic to commit to leaving certain behaviors behind rather than adopting new ones.

June 9, 2022Stimulant medication does not help children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) learn academic lessons more thoroughly or more quickly, according to new research that dispels long-held beliefs about treatment.“Although it has been believed for decades that medication effects on academic seatwork, productivity, and classroom behavior would translate into improved learning of new academic material, we found no such translation,” researchers reported in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.1, 2A controlled study evaluating the impact of stimulant medication on learning was conducted by scientists at the Center for Children and Families at Florida International University (FIU) in a summer classroom setting. Participants included 173 children with ADHD between the ages of 7 and 12 who attended the center’s eight-week summer camp program (77% were male, 23% were female; 86% were Hispanic, and 10% were Black).

When you’re a veteran of a specific diagnosis, you know — inside and out — the gaps in knowledge from many medical professionals. Sure, we can’t expect them to understand everything there is to know about every condition on the planet, but it’s important that certain conditions are taught differently and more in-depth than they are right now.
