Even though I’d had symptoms of mental illness most of my life, I was not diagnosed with schizophrenia (which later changed to schizoaffective disorder, then bipolar, then major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder) until I was 37. Schizophrenia is a lot to serve up on anyone’s plate, especially when they are wearing a blindfold and you don’t tell them the ingredients. I had no idea what the diagnosis meant, but it did leave a bad taste in my mouth, so to speak. I had to self-educate via internet. What followed was an encyclopedia of mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, and much more. Due to both the diagnosis and the medications, my attitude toward myself changed. Before, I had seen myself as whole, with some difficulties others didn’t seem to have. But I had an excellent job at a major medical center, a husband of 13 years, a new house I had designed, creative outlets, and my family of origin and friends. With a diagnosis in hand, I felt defective and “not good enough.”

When you ask the vast majority of people what is harder being a stay-at-home mom or working, most of them would believe that being a stay-at-home mother was easy. However, for those of us who know firsthand – it’s anything but.I’ve heard it all: stay-at-home moms are lazy, or they need to get a real job, or they should work and tend to their kids. The list goes on and on, and honestly, it’s pretty ignorant.A long time ago, I would have honestly even agreed with them.

I’m not sure when I first started to think that I may have autism. It was something I pieced together over time, little things jumping out at me as I recognized myself in others. I’m an early childhood educator, so I spent a lot of time learning about autism, Down syndrome, ADHD, etc. And over the years I’ve worked with many children on the spectrum in various positions such as support staff and teacher. I started seeing myself in the case studies for school projects, I could relate to the children in my care. There was a little voice inside my head telling me to look into this further, but there was a bigger voice in my head that told me that I was being overdramatic and it was silly for me to even consider the idea. I don’t match the stereotypes.

March 13, 2020. It was Popcorn Friday at my kids’ elementary school. I stood in front of a well-used popcorn machine that morning with two other moms and filled countless small wax paper bags for the hundreds of students at our school. Eventually, we ran out of kernels, so I quickly drove to a local store for more. On my way to check out, I snagged a lone six-pack of toilet paper sitting on an end cap. I had heard about a toilet paper shortage and hadn’t had time to make my usual Costco run. I also knew that our upcoming Spring Break would be part of a “two weeks to flatten the curve” effort for something that was being called COVID-19, and I definitely did not want to run out while we hunkered down. I felt dutifully prepared and confident when I brought that six-pack of toilet paper home.

For as long as I could remember, words were always trapped inside my head. I was always the quiet one. The silent one everyone forgot about or overlooked. At home, I spent my time alone in my room with my cats. People often talked about me as if I was deaf and could not hear them simply because I did not speak. They asked others if I could speak instead of asking me.

My battle with an eating disorder began when I was 20 years old and in nursing school. Really, I had had disordered eating from a very young age, but it didn’t become a diagnosable problem until I was 20. When I was very young, around 7 years old, my mother put me on diets, introduced obsessive thinking towards weight, calories, exercise, and constantly shamed me for my eating habits and made me feel as though the body I had wasn’t good enough.

As you reach the middle of your 20s, your metabolism may slow down, which can lead to changes in your body shape and size that will ultimately usher you into your “adult” body. These changes can feel difficult and unexpected, especially if you live with an eating disorder or battle body dysmorphia.

I was living a wonderful life until I ruptured a disc in my neck at age 40 — by rolling over in my sleep. This was an incredible shock for a former competitive gymnast who had never had a serious injury. Excruciating pain ensued, followed by neck surgery and years of chronic pain. My life was derailed. The pain was so intense I wanted to be dead. I tried everything the doctors suggested — with no resolution.

For quite a while in my life, I thought sex was a painful and uncomfortable experience I would just have to get through instead of enjoying it. Part of my autism is that I don’t like to be touched or need to be touched in a certain way. That makes sex and even non-sexual contact complicated. I have very definitive moments where I need to be left alone. This didn’t always line up with how my ex-spouse wanted to treat me.

In July, Texas Governor Abbot issued an executive order, GA-38, that prohibited schools from instituting a mask mandate. He insisted that whether a child should be compelled to wear a mask should be up to a child’s parents.

What now?The school may have ideas for managing your child’s behaviors. But management alone is not enough. To truly and effectively help a child with school behavior problems, you must teach them new skills to ultimately reduce interfering behaviors.
