My name is David and I’m Head of Empowerment and Social Inclusion here at the Mental Health Foundation. I’m one of the charity’s longest-serving members of staff, but this is my first opportunity to thank you directly for your support; I hope we can count on your kindness again this Christmas.

Space Phobia – Edith’s Story

Panic Attacks – Jo’s Story
My everyday life is fairly ordinary. I work as a temporary lecturer and am also a freelance trainer, teaching a variety of subjects to adults in college and at business premises.  I have been doing this for less than a year, and it is quite fun in contrast to the heavy workload I had previously as a college manager.   I travel to and from work on the London Underground and packed buses, and in previous roles I spent most of my week travelling to and fro across London on visits to businesses, taking speeding lifts to offices in buildings I had never visited before.

We were taking an early morning walk to Cromer, all of a sudden I felt the need to run and run combined with a feeling that I was going to die, I now know that I had experienced my first panic attack.

Sarah’s Anxiety Story
I have always been an anxious person since childhood, worrying about things rather than playing with other kids my age but my problems really started around 15 years ago. After losing my best friend to cancer and my partner at the time leaving me weeks after having out daughter, I thought I was coping really well, and then one day I was in town with a friend and we were standing in a queue at the bank and we were chatting away and suddenly everything went hazy.

Karen’s Anxiety Story
I was in my early 20’s when I started getting anxiety, although I had some issues as a kid. At the age of 3 I had alopecia, I wouldn’t sleep, and drove my parents round the bend, I was put on barbiturates, I also had an imaginary friend, and wet the bed. I always felt like I had to protect my parents from certain things, that happened in my life, even when I was wee. I was always scared of being abandoned too, I hated when they went out, I wouldn’t sleep till they came home.

Mary’s Story
I was born in 1937. My mother had extreme post-natal depression and was sent to a mental health hospital, which many people considered shameful in those days. Until I was 11, I was brought up by my grandmother and aunt and was just told that my mother had been ill. I had an older brother who lived with my father (grandmother’s son) and mother. My father often came to see me and gave me much love, as did my grandmother and aunt.

Karen’s Story
I’m Karen and I have a phobia of toilets. There, I said it, I’m out. For some reason, unknown to me, I think the toilet is going to get me, or the pipes will burst, or that it will flush whilst I’m using it. I know none of that will happen, but it terrifies me every day. It’s the subject of much amusement among friends and family, but to me, it’s not funny, it’s simply terrifying.

I’ve tried to function as best I can throughout my entire life but just over a year ago I was diagnosed with a heart condition that is exacerbated by some drugs so antidepressants are now not ok for me to take. I have lived with my anxiety disorder for most of my life, but it really started at aged 15, when I was so acutely anxious I had to take six weeks off school during my GCSE year. I was suffering from an agitated depression, an episode that left me reeling. I was so young and so unwell. It was partly triggered by stressful life events but what I didn’t know at that time was that my anxiety and depression was part of a wider illness- bipolar disorder.
