Hospitalizations for mental health can be helpful, but for some people, they can create traumatic memories and distrust of doctors, especially if the facility is less than ideal. My own personal experiences with hospitalization have shown that facilities can vary greatly, and that advocating for yourself in advance is important to the type of experience you may have.

As humans, we are massive digital consumers. Every single day, multiple times a day, our minds are flooded with content — TV, radio, billboards, posters, newspapers, and of course, social media. Almost every single one of us has a smartphone that keeps us connected with the world every minute of the day, so we can easily access content whenever and wherever we want. With the world in the firm grip of COVID-19, much of the content we now consume is either directly covering the topic of COVID-19, or is somehow related to it. COVID-19 is pretty much all we hear about all day, every day. Our lives have changed because of the coronavirus pandemic, and now we are consuming COVID-19 content across every platform. So what is this doing to our mental health? Are the effects more pronounced if you are someone with a pre-existing mental health condition or are likely to become triggered by the news?

When I first got sober, I spent years writing a memoir about my misadventures with bipolar and addiction and those of others. I thought it would be therapeutic to write it all down. It was. Clickety-clacking away at my keyboard was like getting my sins of mania and addiction absolved.  I didn’t hold back in writing my book “The Bipolar Addict: Drinks, Drugs, Delirium & Why Sober Is the New Cool.” And now, I can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube. But I’m OK with that.

“Bipolar rage” can be a waking nightmare for both the person in its grips and those in its path. It may feel uncontrollable, unstable, and unpredictable. With “regular” anger, there’s usually a trigger, something you can pinpoint and go, “Ah-ha! This is what set it off and why!” With “bipolar rage,” though, there does not necessarily need to be a trigger — it can show up without warning and may often be absent of reason. This type of rage may choose chaos — it’s often not the individual choosing to lose control. If anything, control is something we may feel desperate to have, and that desperation may only make our anger more chaotic.

I was rewatching “Girl, Interrupted” with my fiancée when I noticed the character Susanna states that she is “off meds” as she lists supposedly “good” things. This 1999 film (and its literary predecessor, which was published in 1993) is a bit dated now, but people sometimes still think being “off meds” is “good” or realistic for everyone. Medications, though, are often vital to a person’s overall health and wellbeing — they can help them function in their daily lives as well as in society. Being on or off medication is not a mark of how successful you are at surviving, adapting to, or managing your mental health or chronic illness.

Growing up in the foster care system, I did not have anyone who had grown up with an experience similar to mine. It took a negative toll on my mental health and caused me to experience depression and anxiety. No one I knew had experienced foster care, let alone suffered the death of two parents by the age of 9. Everyone in my circle had their parents. Everyone’s parents looked young.

I’ve written often on my decade-long struggle with grief after losing my father in my 20s. In some ways, that journey isn’t yet over. I still avoid all discussion of death, cancer, or thinking even of the good memories. It’s become a key feature of my depression, but at what point does grief become prolonged grief disorder?

It’s estimated that up to 25% of people who are prescribed antidepressants undergo a weight gain of 4.5 kgs or more.(1,3)However, drastic weight change itself can be a symptom of depression.If you’re concerned about weight gain, it’s important that you don’t stop taking your medication without consulting your doctor first. Your doctor can help you weigh the pros and cons of taking medication, and explain all your options.Changes in weight may not be noticeable for some time after treatment begins.

Other educators might agree with me when I say I surely did not learn how to teach during a pandemic when I was going to college. I teach middle school, and I have now been teaching for about 17 years. Last year and this year have been the toughest years yet — by far. There are days when I get home, and I literally throw myself on the couch, close my eyes, and release a big sigh. There are other times when I have chocolate or get fast food just to treat myself.  I know the COVID-19 pandemic has been difficult for the students, but it affects teachers too.
