Hughes syndrome is also known as antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) and is characterized by the increased likelihood of forming blood clots (thromboses).

While blood clots can be found in any blood vessel throughout the body they most commonly occur in the lower limbs, lungs and brain.

If a blood clot forms in the brain it can lead to stroke. APS may occur as an autoimmune disorder of its own or may occur in conjunction with another autoimmune disorder like lupus.
